The Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation operates the museum as its major program, with a mission to preserve and open up the history of the Nevada Test Site and the American nuclear weapons program. In December 2012 the institution was designated a private national museum, and it holds Smithsonian Affiliate status. It sits on East Flamingo Road rather than the Strip, and the collection reflects that choice: test-program hardware and instrumentation first, spectacle second.
The Davy Crockett gallery holds an XM-388 projectile and a B54 backpack bomb, and the World of Fallout corridor sits just past the gift shop. Go on a weekday morning: the box office stops selling at 5:15.
