Ground broke on May 1, 2014 on the plot behind New York-New York and Park MGM, a joint venture between MGM Resorts International and AEG with Populous as architect. The arena opened April 6, 2016, more than a year before Las Vegas had a major-league team to put in it. The Vegas Golden Knights arrived for the NHL's 2017-18 expansion season and have been the anchor tenant since; PWHL Las Vegas later joined them on the ice.
